Formation
Jet, like coal, is a fossilized wood. It is formed when ancient water-logged wood is compacted by vast pressure below the sea.
It is categorised as a hydrocarbon compound and is classified in the last stage of carbon before the diamond state. It is very light weight and has a hardness of 3-4.
Origins
Poland, France, Germany, Spain, Russia and England. Jet jewelery was created in Britain as far back as 1500 B.C
History
Associated with protection in the afterlife among the Egyptian people. In the 16th Century Jet was carved into prayer beads and religious sculptures and is still used by Native American cultures for religious purposes. Jet has also been seen as a symbol of grieving and was worn by woman in mourning in the 18th Century. Historically, sailors would frequently use Jet as a ‘Travelers talisman’ for protection on their long journeys.
